Managing Diabetes

It is extremely important that diabetes is controlled well and possible problems detected and treated early. Primary care professionals need to have a comprehensive and full understanding of diabetes, its management and complications of the disease. This one-day course is aimed at health professionals who manage diabetic patients and wish to keep updated on new developments. Guidance is offered on organising practice based care programmes.

Course Content

  • What is diabetes?
  • Anatomy and physiology: glucose metabolism
  • Diagnostic test and investigations
  • Hypo and Hyperglycaemia – signs and symptoms
  • Treatment of diabetes – insulin, diet and oral hypoglycaemics
  • General principles of dietary control
  • Common treatments – insulin and oral hypoglycaemics
  • The importance of good diabetic control
  • Complications associated with diabetes including:
  • Retinopathy blindness
  • Diabetic renal failure
  • Diabetic gangrene
  • Increased morbidity and mortality from coronary heart disease and stroke
  • Pregnancy in women with diabetes
  • Organization of a practice-based diabetes care programme
  • Liaising with other agencies
  • Quality assurance, clinical audit and evaluation of diabetes care

Aims/Objectives

To gain a comprehensive understanding of diabetes mellitus and current evidence-based management and expand understanding to:

  • Decrease retinopathy blindness and end-stage diabetic renal failure
  • Reduce amputations for diabetic gangrene
  • Reduce the increased morbidity and mortality from coronary heart disease and stroke
  • To normalise the outcome of pregnancy in women with diabetes
