Course Introduction

Our palliative care course will help you develop the skills and confidence you need to provide high quality end-of-life care.
Your role is an integral part of holistic service delivery for the dying person and their family. Our palliative care course will help you to enhance the quality of life of the dying person and to work effectively as part of the healthcare team Our courses encourage participation and include practical case studies to ensure that you are confident of your role in the care planning process.

You will be allocated 12 CPD points on the completion of the course.

Course Aims

  • To provide holistic care for the dying person and their families
  • To communicate effectively with dying persons and their families
  • To enhance the quality of life of the dying person
  • To recognise and respect the uniqueness of each person’s approach to death
  • To work effectively as part of the healthcare team
  • Define palliative care and terminal care
  • Identify the role of each member of the palliative care team
  • Recognise the important role of the family and the diversity of family structures
  • Identify common fears and anxieties of client & family members at this time
  • Outline specific needs of groups in relation to death, dying & bereavement
  • Demonstrate the role of the HCAs in promoting a sense of worth, self esteem, quality of life and autonomy for the dying person
  • Reflect on own feeling on death, dying and bereavement
  • Understand the grieving process & discuss some coping mechanism for personal loss
  • Demonstrate effective communication skills when dealing with different emotions
  • Identify personal strengths and weakness in communicating with the dying person and family members & know how to have a supportive environment
  • Know how to provide care while promoting safety, respect and comfort in the final stages of life
  • Demonstrate respect & sensitive approach to patient and family members in final days of life
