The respiratory and cardiac workshop will build on knowledge already gained during your professional training and practice.
The course is highly practical and is delivered by theory, practical workshops and clinical casestudies. There will be many opportunities to practice your technique in a safe environment with highly skilled clinicians and each participant will have an opportunity to take an active part in the workshops.   • Anterior and posterior chest
  • Inspection, palpation, percussion and auscultation
  • Breathing: Rate, rhythm, depth
  • Stridor, wheezing dyspnoea
  • Deformities, abnormal inspiratory retraction
  • Flatness, dullness, resonance, hyperresonance, tympany
  • Adventitious lung sounds
  • Continuous lung sounds
  • Pulmonary function
  • Common abnormalities: bronchitis, consolidation, COPD, asthma, pneumothorax, heart failure
  • Aids to interpretation
  • Heart history
  • Introduction to cardiac system – brief overview
  • Jugular veins, carotid pulse
  • Rate, rhythm, heart sounds
  • The ECG
  • ECG – how it links to the sounds depolarization and depolarization
  • Normal heart sounds: First and second sounds; third and fourth sounds
  • Abnormal heart sounds
